Naina Chetti a.k.a Nina Chatu was a prominent, influential merchant from the Coromandel Coast of India operating in Upeh, Malacca, and served as a Shahbandar (harbour master) for Hindu traders.
During the first attempt to establish a trade post, Malacca Sultan arrested a few Portuguese. This is what led to the next invasion, which we saw in previous posts.
Naina Chetti is believed to be helping few of the Portuguese who were in Jail. In addition, acting as an intelligence asset, he became an indispensable figure to the Portuguese commander, Alfonso de Albuquerque.
Due to this, the Portuguese appointed him as the Pendahara / minister of Malacca, after conquering it by 1511. He ruled Malacca on behalf of the new rulers.
But the partnership did not lost long. I understood that the Portuguese lost patience with his autocratic behaviour and they are not comfortable with a Hindu chief for the majority Malay Muslim Population. So they made Sultan Abdullah, Raja of Kampar as Mangkubumi (prime minister).
Humiliated by this, Nina Chatu committed suicide in public.
