Chapter 6: Fluttering Hearts

The train rumbled steadily towards Trichy, aiming to make up for lost time at Poongudi. A mynah, above the paddy fields, caught my eye, soaring high before dipping sharply. My thoughts drifted, drawn to Jyoti. I’d known her for a few years now, and while our conversations were rare, I was familiar with her quick wit and playful teasing. But our interactions over the past two days had sparked something new within me, a fluttering sensation like a sunbird trapped in my chest.

A smile tugged at my lips as I recalled our playful banter earlier that day.

Today’s encounter left me flustered. When she quipped, “Well, someone had to appreciate my culinary skills after yesterday’s disaster,” with a wink, I couldn’t help but feel like I’d been doused with a bucket of Pavala Malli1.

I could not stop smiling then and I declared to her “That settles it then,” my voice thick with amusement.

“From now on, I’ll be your official sambar quality control inspector. And just to warn you, my standards are very high.”

Her eyes sparkled with mischief. “Challenge accepted, Inspector Jayanthan! But beware, even watery sambar can be addictive, especially when paired with Master Chef Jyoti’s recipe.”

We both dissolved into laughter, the gentle hum of the overhead fans providing a steady rhythm to our lighthearted wordplay. And for the first time, the watery sambar didn’t matter. Because amidst the laughter and a warm luminescence of her smile, like a brass lamp casting a gentle glow, I found a flavor far more delicious – the taste of our connection.

Mrs. Mangalam, sipping her tea from a nearby seat, smiled warmly. The twinkle in her eyes spoke volumes of unspoken approval. This budding connection, blossoming like a jasmine beneath the train’s watchful gaze, filled her heart with quiet joy.

Thinking about Jyoti was like sinking into a hive of velvet beetles. The way she patted my shoulder so mischievously replayed in my mind. It was a touch so light, so unexpected, yet it echoed like a phantom sensation. Could fingers truly be that soft? So evocative? So bewitching? The rhythmic clatter of the train faded into the background, replaced by a dull thrumming in my chest. What was happening to me?

The warmth of the memory lingered, even as the train’s ear-splitting whistle jolted me back to the present, announcing our arrival in Trichy.
