Recap: Every morning, Jayanthan’s train rattled to a halt at Poongudi, a station that marked the halfway point on his journey to Trichy. But Poongudi wasn’t just another stop – it was where Jyoti, a bright and cheerful hawker, brought a ray of sunshine into his day. Jayanthan, captivated by her smiles and their daily conversations, began to believe a connection was blossoming.
Part 2: Parallel Tracks:
Chapter 9/26: Impromptu Errand
Life is like a pavai koothu puppet show, with time as the puppeteer. Sometimes we dance perfectly, other times we trip and stumble. Maybe these are just tests, like a kind teacher checking if we’ve learned our lessons of being sensible and mature. I’d faced many of them before, and each one left its mark, good or bad.
Words can slip out too fast, like a train on a slippery track. And the regret, oh the regret! It stings like a tiny fishhook stuck in a baby catfish’s jaw. I’d gone over it a million times – ‘what if I said this instead?’ But there’s no rewind button in life. All those doubts churning in my head, just like the catfish fighting the hook. Like that childhood English lesson taught, ‘Will those days come back?’ A chance you grab is a chance you win, but a missed one is gone forever.
Another test was about to begin that day. Jyothi called out to me just as I was heading for the train. I turned, eyebrow raised, a question hanging in the air. What new surprise did Jyothi have in store for me this time?
Suddenly, Jyoti’s eyes lit up. “I just remembered!” she exclaimed, a mischievous glint in her eyes. “Amma needs some special spices for a dish tomorrow. I think we can get all in one place in Trichy market.”
I knew it was unlikely, but her feigned distress resonated with me. A smile played on my lips. “Sounds like a celebration, Jyoti. But who am I to deny a mother’s special request? Why don’t we hop on the train together and see if we can find them?”
The words tumbled out before I could stop them, a foolish invitation hanging in the air. A jolt of regret shot through me. Was this a mistake? My mind raced, the logical part screaming that I had crossed the line, while another, more impulsive voice whispered of adventure with Jyoti. There was no taking back the arrow I’d just fired.

A blush tinged her cheeks, a playful surrender in her eyes. “Perhaps,” she conceded, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips.

I hope he aces this test with Jyot <3 🙂
A chance you grab is a chance you win, but a missed one is gone forever.
Such a profound line. I don’t understand what the regret here is though? Jyoti seems happy with Jayanthan’s response to her statement
Thanks! You’re right, Jayanthan is scared. He wants to ask Jyoti to come with him, but worries things won’t go well. Will he be brave and ask her anyway? We’ll find out soon!
Thanks for mentioning the line about taking/missing a chance! Just like the previous one, I added that bit last night. I really love seeing your comment come in!
Ah… looks like the feelings are mutual… 🙂 Happy for both of them!! 🙂
You got it! Yes, we can feel the sparks, from both sides. Thank you for reading and leaving this nice comment!
Reading their connection blossom is a joy. I relate with Jayanthan’s self doubt. Sometimes when we get what we desperately want, it can feel too good to be true! But I think Jyoti’s signals are pretty clear!
After all we are all humans, Careena ji. Many of us speak our mind. Skillful ones don’t. Thanks for spending your valuable weekend in this chapter.
