The Rocky Poems at Ellora

Jaggu was anxiously waiting at one of the platforms of Dadar station. He looked like a lost child at a temple festival. He was waiting for Devagiri Express bound for Secunderabad.

It was a tiresome day at his iron scrap company. By the time he left the godown, it was almost 7pm. His train was scheduled for 9pm. He rushed to Borivali to take dresses for 2 days and rushed to Dadar station like a 108 ambulance.

Boss of his very first company was a master in Ajanta and Ellora. Jaggu called him a couple of weeks back to get his suggestion to visit those places.

“What a kollan (scrap iron seller) is going to do in an artistic place? Are you going to dig any iron mine there?”

“Ayo sir. No. Just to enrich my..”

“Enrich what?”

Our hero Jaggu removed all his ornamental romanticisms in his words and put it in black & white.

“No sir. I have a weekend. I’d like to visit Ajanta and Ellora”

He suggested reaching Jalgaon first. It is easier to reach Ajanta from there.  It was not convincing for Jaggu. It was true. Ajanta is nearer to Jalgaon. But Ellora is far away, more than 200 KMs. Travel time will ruin his plan. Mumbai to Jalgaon; Jalgaon to Ajanta; Ajanta to Ellora; Ellora to Aurangabad; Aurangabad to Mumbai. Jaggu decided it wouldn’t work out. He finalized one option finally

  • Mumbai – Aurangabad (1 night trip by train – onward)
  • Aurangabad – Ellora – Aurangabad (1 hour drive – each way)
  • Aurangabad – Ajanta – Aurangabad (One and a half hour drive – One way)
  • Aurangabad – Mumbai (1 night trip by train – return journey)

He justified his choice to his consciences using these points.

Jaggu found good reviews about the travels on Wiki Travel site. He dialed them from the dusty and rusty phone of his iron scrap company. Pankaj picked up the phone on the other end. Jaggu spoke to him few simple sentences.

“I will come to Aurangabad after one week. Hindi and Marathi letters are like Karasev and Seenisev (sweet sev) for me. I can not speak both of them. I like to visit Ajanta and Ellora. I need someone who can pick me from railway station on Saturday morning, take me to those places, and drop me the same railway station by Sunday night. Could you help me?”

Pankaj was so confident, “You just come over. Don’t worry”.

Jaggu asked for one more assistance, “Could you book a hotel room as well, please?”.

“No problem”.

A reliable business man like Pankaj are the Gems of Indian tourism. If Jaggu was the president of India, he would make him a tourism minister. Jaggu’s colleage said that the travel agent may get a commission for booking the room, etc etc. So what? He work for Jaggu, right? As long as he helps his guests to have a memorable journey, nothing wrong with giving him minister post! No. Not to get more commission; but to establish trusted tourism environment. It’s rare to see such sincere guys in India – or at least in Jaggu’s native place.

The next step was to book the tickets in Devagiri Express, all within 15 minutes! The search for caves would be sweet like a jilebi only if there was no travel problem!

All was well, except that Dadar station, where Jaggu was waiting for his train then. There were plenty of platforms like Chennai Central. There was a parade of night trains. They came and stopped on the platforms with a screeching sound one after another. At no time, they left the platform with a paaang horn. In between, they wait for 1 or 2 minutes to board the passengers. Miserably some of the trains do not have name boards at all. Jaggu enquired here and there, and finally he was waiting on that platform. Despite being a nationalistic, he was blaming himself.

‘Indians do wonders; sometimes blunders too.’

Was it that difficult to keep the name boards and arrival and departure screens? Indian railway should learn to serve its guest like Pankaj!

The train arrived late by 10 minutes. The crowd of passengers started running back and forth on the platforms like the warriors running in war fields in Baahubali movie. Jaggu saw all passengers start running back and forth furiously, like the Kaalakeya-s of Baahubali movie. He, too, ran across the mob to find his S8 coach.

Representational picture (c) Wikipedia

Jaggu was sitting in his aisle seat. There was a white lady sitting in the opposite seat with an North (or east) Indian guy, who looked younger than her. With an oily face and a kadukkan (ear ring) he looked weird. It was like Pakoda Kathar (a comedian in old Tamil movies) and Padmini (Leading heroine in old Tamil movies) acting in the lead roles. Whatever. It is up to an individual.

There was an elite-bald-gentleman sitting besides Jaggu. He took out baby cucumbers, a knife and a plastic plate. While he started cutting the cucumbers, he tried to socialize with the white lady. Bored Jaggu eavesdropped into their conversation.

“Haaai”

“Haai”

“Are you a tourist here?”

“Ya. I’m a traveler” *smiles*

“Interesting.. Which country are you from?”

“Belgium”

“Oh you travel alone? That’s great. European ladies are usually bold in nature..” (The discussion was not annoyed by the tuk tuk sound of cutting the cucumber in plastic plate).

“Na Na.. He is my companion.” Her fingers pointed at the kadukkan guy with the oily face. Kadukkan guy smiled at the elite for the sake of doing it.

“Oh.. Wonderful. “. (To the kadukkan guy) “How do you know her?”

“…”

(To the European) “How do you know him? You need to be careful while traveling alone”. Jaggu understood the elite man got suspicious.

“He is my Facebook friend”

Jaggu felt he should jump out of the train immediately.

The elite-balded-head took out a bottle and glass. A transparent liquid with a savor smell was poured into the glass with bup bup sound.”

“You want to have some wine?”

“No Thank You. I have mine”.

Jaggu stood up to push his bag on his upper birth. Like an angry monkey, he jumped to his birth at no time. He could not tolerate the discussion any more as he was so jealous of the kadukkan and elite. Still the discussion was going on, like the one between Indian and Chinese armies.

“Why don’t you have some salads”

The kadukkan boy was still looking out side the window on the opposite side.

“No. Thank you. I don’t like cucumbers”

She might be bored as well. She too got up and came up to the opposite upper birth. She smiled at Jaggu and thanked him, as he helped her to switch on the fan. Before she completed her odomos coating, Jaggu went to a deep Zzz mode with a light snoring.

While he was asleep, he woke up on hearing the noise of stone pelting on the train. Aurangabad was marked as a district of concerns due to naxalism.

There are two unsolvable problems in India – one is diabetes; the other one is stone-pelting!

As promised, Pankaj’s driver was waiting with a name plate early in that cold morning. It was written as JAGGU, Mumbai. Jaggu got goosebumps. He became a Mumbaikar in just 3 weeks :-). A nice room was reserved for him in a nice hotel as well.

At Aurangabad station

The punctual driver Easwar told Jaggu, “You take a nap first. We may leave at 8 a.m. Hotel breakfast may not be suitable for you. I will take you to another South Indian restaurant for breakfast”.

Jaggu slept for two hours. He still felt the jolting of the train compartment. He went to the reception at 7:50. Easwar came on time, as promised. There was a hotel nearby. Easwar preferred to have Kesari after Jaggu compelled him to give him company. On his recommendation, Jaggu ordered for dosa. Actually, it was not that good. Jaggu should have ordered local food.

They started after breakfast. Easwar liked Aurangabad very much. He kept on praising his town. Jaggu was not amused as it was like Trichy or Madurai in Tamilnadu. They came out of the city and joined the beautiful highway in 15 minutes.

The attractions started from Khuldabad. They visited Aurangzeb’s tomb. It was a wrong choice to have a tomb as the first stop; that too belongs to a tyrant. Jaggu asked Easwar to avoid the local attraction as he wanted to spend time at Ellora.

The high way was like any other Tamil Nadu highway (of 2007). It had pits like the dents of Moon. There were mountains, ridges, and bushes all over. Jaggu was wondering, if there were a bunch of mountains, it would be surprising only if Ellora had not been constructed!

Daulatabad was another town on the way. It had a fort with artillery. It became the capital of Mohammed bin Tughluq. Later that place was abandoned due to water scarcity. Devagiri was its old name. Changing Devagiri into Daulatabad is secular and renaming it back to Devagiri is communal in India!

Jaggu avoided that port, as his time did not allow him. The road contained different entrances; they might have been the entrances to the old fort. The ghat road starts immediately after Daulatabad. Ridges of fort walls were seen even on the hills.

Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, sometimes referred to as the Ghrneshwar or Ghushmeshwar Temple, is one of the shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva that is referenced in the Shiva Purana. It was on their way.

This place was not in Jaggu’s plan. Still, he respected his driver’s choice as he insisted “How come you come to our place and refuse to see this?” :-). That was one of the 12 Jyotirlinga Lingam temples. It is located in the village of Verul, very close to Ellora.

They went down and down like a cobra moves among piles of straws to reach Ellora at 11am.

Upon entering, Jaggu saw the Kailasanatha cave and screamed in joy. But Easwar did not stop the car.

“Hey, Stop Stop. where are you going?” Jaggu shouted. Easwar got worried if he would jump out of the window.

“Wait. Look the way I suggest you” Easwar replied with a determination. He stopped the car in one place. Jaggu will look at the nearby caves and return. Both of them will drive to the next cave. Thus he was able to see all the caves in 4 hops.

A total of 34 caves. Hindu caves, Buddhist caves and Jain caves. It is a treasure trove of art.

It will become a book, if the caves are explained one after the other. Readers can enjoy the pictures below.

The journey begins, directly to the last cave 32. This is called Indra-sabha
The kodi-maram or dhwaja sthambham (flag pole) had grown tall. Taller than you and Jaggu.

What made me so excited was the grandeur of it!
Floors and canopies in the cave.
Very fine sculptures.
And, its size! WOWW!! Massive!

What a cave, not at all. It is a palace with multiple attics!
Cave 33 – Indrani (There was a connecting path between the caves. Jaggu played hide and seek)
The majestic pillar, in which the wavy ornaments and small and large reliefs are sculpted elegantly. I do not know what to say, adornment for stone, adornment for God Himself?
Possible to do in a stone? Yes!
Is it to support the roof or to soak us in dreams?

Hmm.. seems there is a path here.
Wow. there are some caves on the other side..
Later, he ran to the other side and came back. The path is a bit difficult. Make sure you do not fall off the cliff. This is where the waterfall is located during the rainy season. It may pour for six or seven months. Jaggu is not lucky to view that.

Cave 1: The origin. The first cave. It is said that the cave was probably built for lodging and then started to be used by Buddhist monks. 6th century AD

To this day, Kailasa Temple is the reminiscent of the Ellora caves. Why? Because of its beauty? But everything there was beautiful! Its structure made the difference. It did not belong to West Indian architecture. The temple belongs to South Indian architecture. The big temple was carved out of a single rock, from top to bottom. Not from bottom to top! Remember the monoliths of Mahabalipuram.

The Kailasa Temple is a fine example of South Indian-Rashtrakuta temple architecture. Rashtrakuta King Krishna-I – ruled in the 7th century – extended his rule until Karnataka. It is said to have been built in the form of the Virupaksha Temple at Pattadakal.

The awful work of rock carving. South Indians may feel at home, on alien soil. As if in a trance, you may be wandering in and out of that temple. It may be one of your enchanting moments, in which you burst into endless soliloquy.

On the way back

Did those caves get carved into the rock, or were they sculpted in our minds? Jaggu’s mind was overwhelmed with Ellora. This is our address, our identity, our ancestral home. Jaggu’s desire was that everyone should go at least once in their life time. Perumal thirumozhi renders a beautiful line ‘கோனேரி வாழும் குருகாய்ப் பிறப்பேனே’, that expresses the poet’s eagerness to rebirth as a stork in Venkata hill (Tirupati). Jaggu wondered, what if Ellora rejuvenate itself with all the monks of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism pursuing their duties. If that happens, he wanted to rebirth as a rat, that can steal the ghee of the lamps of these cave temples and eat it secretly 🙂

Quenching my desire for Elephanta

Jaggu was in a hurry, as if he were about to fire an Agni missile in next few minutes. He woke up at 6, took an emergency bath like a crow, and started running towards Borivali station on 1st Dec 2007. His favorite panipuri stall and Bombay lassi stall – located on the station road – were taking rest, after a hot business the previous night. He introduced to Dhokla at a street side vendor in front of his guest house. On looking at its size and colour, he thought it was a dessert like Kesari. After his first bite, he realized that it tasted like idly-upma (usually made from left over idlies). Remaining dhoklas at the thambalam (tray) grimaced at him.

Boats for Elephanta depart from India Gate since 9 am. He was rushing to catch the first boat. He went to Matunga the previous week by Mumbai’s local train. He was squeezed and thrown out like the outer shell of Mosambi being trashed in Juice shops. Crowded train is not new to him. But it made him to think Chennai’s crowded trains were trivial when compared with Mumbai. Was there a way to escape now?

Some idea flashed in his mind ‘Well, What if I take a first class ticket?’. A return ticket to church gate was about 100+ rupees. He learned the lesson 2. Getting into first class alone did not reduce the ‘mosambi squeezing‘. The rupee was wasted.

Morning time rush, a Mumbai local train, Dadar
Mario Miranda’s cartoon about Mumbai local train. Picture (c) radhikasdiaries.wordpress.com

He imposed himself after realizing that it was the taste of Mumbai. Mumbai demonstrated its boasting work culture on a Saturday morning too.

But Mumbaikars travelled happily as if there is nothing wrong with their mutual-musambi-squeezing; they are squeezed just for the heck of it. Their ironed apparels crumbled like the dried-ladies finger pieces of morkolambu (A curry made with yoghurt in Tamilnadu/Kerala/Andhra). The aroma of sweat mingled with their perfume, like the pharma waste adulterates the Kaveri water. All bogies were bloated with passengers hanging on their foot boards. Jaggu fit himself well inside the carriage, like a three pin plug docks itself into a tight socket.

Waiting for the next local train, Dadar

India Gate is located at a walking distance Church Gate station. Walking along the platform, he was thinking ‘Is there a way to eat??’.

The boats to Elephanta island started from India Gate. There were two types of tickets, lesser rate for downstairs; costly ticket for the terrace. Married couples may choose downstairs; lovers may go upstairs. Hello, take it right sense ah. I mentioned married couples are usually cost sensitive!! Miser Jaggu chose the basement.

Gateway of India

Although there are different types of boats were available, there no safety protocol followed. If you have something on your own, please take it.

The boat took a reverse and diverted to the western side of the city. The search for the caves began in the Arabian Sea. Oil spills glittered rainbow dots on the salty water. A ship was approaching with a deafening foghorn. Jaggu was smiling at the ship. He assumed himself as Jack, standing on the bow with his Kate, by keeping their hands spread wide enough.

“It was a ship.
It submerge you deep!
You dream for a titanic.
You blind about tight-panic?
Stop being romantic.
I know you are an idiotic.
Jam bajar Jaggu. Shut up, you’re makku*”

His conscience made fun of him. (*makku -> fool).

‘It’s not the way you talk to me, my dummy. Apologize to me’

His conscience got hurt and uttered “Oh right. I’m sorry you are a makku” before disappearing from the scene.

An elephant gently lifted its spine from the sea water. Yes. It was Elephanta.

The land around the Elephanta island looked swampy (like any other islands). The suffocating roots of mangroves stretched their heads outside the mud. It looked like tonnes and tonnes of baby snakes peeped their heads above.

This is where the island starts with Mangroves

The boat dropped Jaggu at a small jetty. On seeing the serene view of Elephanta, he thought he should bring his girl friend there. But he should find one first.

Jaggu thought he forgot something. He returned to the the sailor. He asked Sailor “Bhaiya.. Return.. any boat.. can..?”. He tried to mean, Can I board any boat to return to the shore?

“Yes, Yes” said the sailor.

The Elephanta boat house

He turned back and walked on the single road towards the island. Strong wind flew across the root of his hair. But it was highly humid as well. He heard someone called him “vaa” (come in Tamil) in a base voice. Wondering who it was, he looked back at his sailor. He was taking deep puff of scissor cigarette. Jaggu verified at him “Bhaiya, you called me?”. The sailor did not have any further answers for him. He showed ‘no‘ using his hand gesture. Jaggu was not sure if he said a ‘no‘ or ‘gth‘. He resumed his walk towards the island

His scalp felt the hot sun. Hunger pinched his tummy too. But the windy entrance tried its best to pacify him. He found the rails for a toy train, that starts from the jetty towards the entrance. Your little angels can ride.

Elephanta get a feel

Petty shops show case drinks, snacks, maps and handicrafts under colourful thavalam (pandal or shelter) or tarpaulin sheets. He heard the base voice again “Yes, that’s the way”. He looked around. There was no one except two little ones blowing whistle to enjoy their holiday.

The path, it will be very bad, if they havent built this. There are many shops selling handicrafts, textiles etc

The path was built to help the visitors during their uphill. Jaggu reached the top and turned his head randomly to the right. He saw see a majestic entrance to a massive cavern. Archaeological sites will captivate you at the first sight. It vibrates your tiny genes, those were inherited from your ancestors. You can go back to those places as many times as you want. But that first impression will be kept as an engraved souvenir into your mind, isn’t it?

Jaggu might have been 13 years old when he first went to Sittannavasal. His memories still safeguard his first appearance of those Jain beds.

Cave temples are special to Indians especially Tamils. There is no shortage of cave temples in Tamil Nadu. There are Thirumayam, Sittannavasal, Narthamalai and Malayadipatti.

Still why Jaggu liked to visit the cave temples of Maharashtra? The size matters. Caves carved out of hard granite rocks in Tamil Nadu may be up to 10 x 10 bedroom in size. But the caves carved out of soft rocks at Maharashtra are majestic and palace-like. They are known for their multi-stories, paintings and sculptural beauty. Maharashtra is a place where you can see all of them.

In a nutshell, what TN has are cave temples and what MH has are cave palaces! It is not underestimating the cave temples or a stone sculpture of TN. If I say so, Lord Siva and Vishnu will come from Thirumayam cave and push me to patala loka like King Mahabali!

Other than that, they are art treasures. apprived by UNESCO. Unfortunately they are vandalized like any other monuments of India.

One day is not enough to enjoy them. But Jaggu was only able to allocate one day to each attractions.

The base voice assured Jaggu once again. ‘That’s the way’, as he approached towards the cave 1. The entrance of he cave looked elegant with four decorated pillars. The green patches of grass and tree makethe place to look serene. This was one of the popular caves of Elephanta.

The cave 1

Believe it or not my dear friends, it is not a cave. It is a mahal, a open-door-mansion. The height is more than twice of a normal human being. 27 square meter in area. The pillars – starting at the surface of the cave to support the rock at the terrace with decorative rings – were artistic and plumy
Massive!

Nataraja

Nataraja – the dancing Siva with half closed eyes – on the right side of the first cave. Large one. It was tampered. The unknown sculptor sculpted the dynamic dance movements in stone and made the relief lively. God gives us life. But an artist gives life to Gods, doesn’t he?
Lively!

Sanctum

A sanctum. Awesome dvarakapalaka-s were guarding the outside. They have grown to the roof without deceit. They are used to be rough and tough in screening the visitors. At the same time, they admire the innocents with their arresting smile.

The Linga shrine, cave 1 and two massive dvarapalaka-s. Estimate the size using the heights of the visitors in front.

“Big brother, let me take a photo of you”

“You came this far to take my picture, makkuDvarapalaka snorted.

“You too?”

“All right. Don’t waste my time, take picture and move quickly. ”

Lord was sitting gracefully inside the sanctum and smiling at his visitors. Part of his body was glittering in the light came from the entrance. Other part of the body remained dark. Yes, He was known to be flexible to love and tough at hatred.

-Thirumurai

With the influence of inner darkness of ego, an Asura named Antaka persecuted and destroyed all the lives of the world using the boons he received. At the end of his scepter, Lord Shiva tortured and destroyed him using his trident for the sake of the deva-s who complained about it.

Larger relieves of rock cut temples are also found in Tamil Nadu. Two of such beauties came to my mind.

Dvarapalaka, Siva rock cut temple, Thirumayam
Panel of Palli konda perumal, Adishesha and Mathu Kaithabha, Thirumayam

Well, What’s the difference between them and these? Was it decoration, Stone decoration, Curly hair, decorative art works of the crown, elegance in apparels. The sculptor have seized our mind at all these. You should not under estimate the structures at Tamilnadu, dear friends. The rocks of Maharashtra are like that. Smooth and soft. If hit Tamil Nadu’s granite rock with a chissel, You will hear a sound dingggg. Which is why, contractors of Tamil Nadu blast the granites with explosives and export them 😉

Siva Parvati marriage

The life-size relieves of the bride and groom was so elegant. The love on the gesture of Siva and shyness on Parvati, the deva-s and kinnara-s floating on the sky make this panel exquisite. A Stunning panel!

SIVA PARVATHI MARRIAGE – KALYAANA SUNDARA MOORTHI – RIGHT FROM ENTRANCE-R

“Mother, Can’t you choose a better groom?”

“Why dear? What’s wrong with him? See his groom hair style, passionate eyes, lovely lips and his adorned chest. What’s wrong with my selection?”

“That man is in disguise. You wait for two days. He will be sitting in grave yard and coating such adorned chest with ashes. You wasted your life, mummy”

“See what he says, my lord”

Jaggu escaped from that place, before Lord turned his eyes on him.

Gangadhara

GANGAAVATHAARAN , HEIGHT REFERENCE – CAVE 1

Measure the height of the panel using the height of the visitor in front of him. Guys, you may be fed up with what Jaggu had called great, big and massive. This is it.

Arrogance, pride and ego are our destroyers. To beat someone with such evil mindsets, one needs to have strong mind. Ganga’s force is portrayed as arrogance and Siva symbolizes a mighty mind. Since Siva held Ganga as a captive, he is known as Gangadhar.

Trimurti

THE ULTIMATE MEHESA MOORTHI SIVAA (THRI MOORTHI) – REARSIDE SANCTUM, CAVE 1

Maheshamurthy Shiva is in the rear sanctum of the first cave. They call him Trimurti.

Rudra is the one with the mustache and anger on the left. His anger destroy the world, Burn it to ashes. Finally vibhuti (the holy ash) alone will remain.

The gentleman in middle is in loveable posture. He maintains the balance between good and evil.

Yogeshwara is on other side. He is in deep dhyana for the good of our world.

Satyojada and Ishana are the two faces behind. Sculptor might have thought the visitor split the rock worship those faces.

THE DICE GAME

Siva and Parvati played the dhaayam (game of dice). Siva was losing. He played kallatam (malpractice) to win his wife. Parvati’s face is in tantrum.

“See mummy, he doesn’t know a simple tactic of losing the game in front of a wife. What does he want? love of his wife or a simple win in dice? How did you agree to marry him? You wasted your life.”

“A makku‘s father is also a makku, my son. I’m trying to rebirth again and again to see his improvement. I Born as Meenakshi in Madurai too. Hope he’ll improve.”

A Siva temple without Ravana is rare. He has his own best position in this panel.

They are wonderful bass relief sculptures with elaborate decorations. Let it be the beauty of the sitting posture of Parvati, or the hair style of the Dvarapalaka-s, or mysterious omgara visible in Trimurti. You would like to stay there and keep on enjoying them inch by inch. The Real Grande! Elephanta is a perfect example of West Indian architecture and art of sculpture.

But sadly all of the sculptures have been destroyed. Human disasters and natural disasters. Some reports says that the Portuguese took training to shoot with a gun. If such sculptures are fully available, we may worship mamma and pappa with fullest satisfaction.

An unfinished cave

UNFINISHED CAVE 5

The unfinished caves denotes a void. It may be an unfinished endeavor, an unfinished project of a team of great sculptors, Or it may be a dream disrupted in halfway. Who knows, it may be a downfall large sculptural empire at this place.

Not a lot of people mention unfinished caves. Whether in Elephanta or in Ajanta, the emotions – that these unfinished caves have given the visitor – are intense and indescribable; like reminiscent of a deserted house, reminiscent of an expired property, Recall of the fall of a kingdom or race. It may even be the end of the history of this place. Or is the place is telling us ‘I’m done with this’?

Cannon Hill

Friends, we are hiking through a path, made by human foot, in the dense forest of Elephanta hill.

IF WE COULD WALK ALONE IN THIS PATH AT NIGHTS, THAT WILL BE A LIFE TIME ACHIEVEMENT – WAY TO CANNON HILL

Somebody told Jaggu that there is a cannon at the top of the hill. Jaggu is always interested in such childish attractions. He started hiking through the deserted path of the forest in that humid weather. Will anybody hike a hill in afternoon time?

On the way, the darshan of the sea through trees and bushes refreshed his and filled him with joyous emotions. He felt energized and walked further.

MARINE VIEW
MARINE VIEW
WAY TO CANNON HILL

If it rains, you will not be able to follow that trail. Because it will be slippery like a banana skin. You may skid and slide!

MARINE VIEW. This is the dock where Jaggu landed.

At last Jaggu reached the top of the hill. A British cannon was placed on the top of the hill. He wondered how many ships might have broken from he bombs of that cannon? How many people it might have murdered. Radhika says that Mumbai is ceded to British as a ‘gift’ in her blog post. That’s the real meaning of the slavery word ‘Common Walth’.

A CANNON OF BRITISH TIME

Jaggu murmered himself ‘I think I can go back’. He heard the base voice again, “You found me already?”. He saw back and forth. He felt nervous to be alone there. He rushed to his downhill.

Jaggu came alone.
Found it error prone.
scared at undertone.
Ran faster cyclone.

Jaggu’s conscience came out and laughed enough.

Jaggu found that tourism department paved a good way to go around (except the hiking path). He felt thirsty as he came down. The noon son is merciless like the destroyer face of Trimurti. You may need to carry enough water when you go there.

Half way down the hill, Jaggu found a Maratha brother was selling lemon juice.

“Kithna Hua, Bhaiya

“Dhus rupiye.”

“Dhus rupie!! ??”

He said something in response. But Jaggu did not understand.

“salt.. salt.. no sugar. ”

He mixed a pinch of powder in the juice glass. Jaggu saw particles like dust in rainbow colour were floating. Jaggu enquired about it with that Maratha brother.

“Kya hua, Bhaiya?”

“Masala masala !!”

‘drink it in one gulp da’ Jaggu’s conscience encouraged him.

‘You still live alive in Mumbai just by knowing one word – Bhaiya!, don’t you?’.

‘Shut up, you dummy’

It started singing again and vanished.

“Jam bajar Jaggu. Shut up, you’re makku

The Frenchman – who was swallowing another glass of lemon water beside – looked at Jaggu and smiled.

‘What is here to laugh at me? What makes your glass so special? Same masala?’ Jaggu murmured himself and asked the French man with smile, “how is your juice?”

“Ha ha. too much sweeeeetttt!!” – Poor guy. He squealed too much he pronounced the word ‘sweet’!

“howz yours?” He asked in return.

“Okay for me. I chose salt”

It was the time to move on. Jaggu finished his downhill and went towards the boat jetty. On his way, he cross the first cave . He felt some eyes on his back. “Look there, he is leaving” The base voice said to some one. “Poor boy. He got scared” a feminine voice felt pity at him. Jaggu turned towards that direction. he could saw the sanctum and twin dvarapalaka-s stood with the same majesty.

CAME OUT OF THE CAVE 1

“Who is that? Is that him and her?” – Jaggu asked Dvarapalaka.

Raising his pointing finger in his right hand, Dvarapalaka – with his glittering eyes – pointed inside the sanctum. A streak of smile appeared on his lovely face.

Pursuing a Tamilian Cafe at Matunga

Have you ever tasted a South Indian Filter Coffee at Matunga? That was Jaggu’s plan for 1st Dec 2007!

Jaggu noted down the address of Mani’s lunch home. He boarded the train early in the morning of that bright Sunday. He took the whole stretch from Borivali to Church Gate, from where he switched to Central line to reach Matunga.

Before reaching Matunga, he boarded the wrong train, which went to Matunga West. Again he blamed his fate and came back!

Kamalhassan fans are emotionally connected with this place because of his 80’s film Nayagan (नायागन). After getting down, he was taken over by the evident south Indian aroma like Tamil movie songs, posters, poo-kadai (flower shops). He enquired a shopkeeper about the way to reach Mani’s.

“Bhaiya, Mani Iyer Hotel kithar hai”

“ரைட்ல போய் பர்ஸ்ட் லெப்ல திரும்புங்க.” (Go right and take the first left) he responded in Tamil. Jaggu and the shop keeper laughed together!

Jaggu resumed his walk through the flower shops. He ordered for a full meal on banana leaf with sambar, vathal-kuzhambu, Rasam, Payasam, and curd followed by a filter coffee.

What else? He had sound sleep back at the guest house. The flower shops, the rosary garlands hanging on the sticks, and the fingers tying the flowers filled his mind through out the day. “Velu Nayakkar” (The hero of Nayagan movie) was the only item missing!

An overcast Mumbai darshan

The travelogue starts at Mannar & Co. “Jaggu, You are leaving to Mumbai tonight. You need to report at Dahisar Materials Co, tomorrow morning. You will be there for a month to collect the scrap materials. Collect your tickets and guest house details from admin department” Jaggu’s manager issued orders before he went out of office. Jaggu knew it was his ‘single tea & masal vadai’ time.

Jaggu was summoned by the admin team. He was so excited when he received his travel tickets. It was his first airplane visit.

Jaggu used to tell his friend Tingu multiple times, “When will we fly in airplane?”, when they returned from the Andhra mess after their tummy-tearing-lunch. Tingu used to pacify him “What’s wrong with our Pallavan express and Karaikudi passenger. They have attached toilet also.. That is enough for us, da”.

“hmm.. Will the pilot open the toilet waste d?”.

Jaggu used to get clarified by his philosopher Tingu.

As Jaggu was not sure if it was a genuine reply or a parody, he kept quiet and walked silently to their bachelor’s paradise.

“So what, if they open it, it will be at the size of paneer (rose water) drop. We may nod our head to agree to it, as if we accept paneer spray” answered Tingu.

It was a quarter past five. Jaggu was still roaming around the rusted iron bars.

His colleague Gundu Mani shouted at him “Jagguu, What time is your flight?”

“9”

“Then, what are you doing here with your dirty uniform. You should be in airport at least one or two hours before.”

“Is it so?”

“Jaggu, don’t be a makku*. You need few hours to go back home and pack your luggage. You need to leave now”. Gundu Mani was like that. He will try to portray himself as a wise man by calling others a makku at a gathering. But at that time, it was a valid alert.

Jaggu packed his lunch box and inserted it into his wire-basket.  He was on his way on his BSA cycle already. His wire-basket was hanging on his handle-bar.

* makku – fool.

***

Jaggu was copying, what his co-passenger did. Was it what he did during his board exams! He had just arrived at the domestic terminus of Chennai fifteen minutes ago by local train. He was munching a groundnut packet, when the train entered Trissulam station. When he aligned his shoulder bag on one side and the luggage on the other side, the groundnuts jumped out and scattered on the floor.

Boarding the plane, occupying a window seat, sitting near a Mumbai-based entrepreneur and gossiping with her in butler English all the way until Mumbai are all irrelevant to this travelogue! It was a full moon day. With a talkative girl by his side and the moon splashing through the glass window, that evening should have been his memorable one. But his heart was pumping hard, as if he were vaccinated with mRNA covid19 drug. Because he should find his residence, take a nap, and report to the company the next morning. He was not sure if he could manage well. Because of his 0 knowledge with HINDI!

When he came out of the airport, he felt – like a car that ran out of gas – emotionally. Later he understood, it was a unique flavor of our Indian airports. Whenever we come out of Indian railway stations and airports, we may feel like somebody pushed us outside the safety circle into a jungle of cheats and touts. Getting bullied by the union members of taxi drivers and auto drivers is part of our national heritage, too.

Well, there was a black and yellow taxi. Jaggu saw Super Star Rajinikanth driving these kind of taxis in his 80’s movie ‘Padikathavan‘. The driver read his address slip and said, “I know”. In addition to the driver, he had a teenager beside. It was over 12 midnight! The place looked deserted like an empty Goshala. He hoped he could rely on that driver. He had no other choices as well.

மஞ்சக்காட்டு மைனா
Representational picture

Jaggu looked at the highway sign boards carefully and tried to memorize them. In case, if there was a fight and the driver left him stranded on the highway, he needs some signs to recall his way back. Yes. He used to think like 007 often. Such a great idea! It looked to be the highway to Gujarat. ‘Who the hell is he? He is driving so far. The highway looks like an anaconda. Will he drop me in Gujarat?’ He was anxious about his taxi driver.

Jaggy lost his patience and asked is driver “How much time will it take, Bhaiya?”. Bhaiya, Beti, Didi are the few Hindi words he learnt from Hindi movies. It was amazing. He is able to learn such words, apart from worshiping his dream girl Kajol.

He replied Jaggu in some language – Was it Marathi or Hindi? How does it make a difference for Jaggu, who doesn’t know both.

He could not appreciate Mumbai’s gloomy night and gleamy highway sign boards. The reliable driver from Mumbai dropped him at the guest house at 1am. Jaggu was grateful to him. Borivali is 16 kilometers from Santa Cruz! Not all taxi/auto drivers are righteous like him.

***

Jaggu rented an auto-rickshaw to go to the company the next day. Soon he started reading Hindi letters on Mumbai’s public transport. What would a Dravidian fanatic think about a Tamilian who is reading Hindi? Whatever, he had started to spell Bo-Ri-Va-Li.. then Dha-hi-sa-r. When he was so proud of himself for his half-pedal Hindi, something crashed his ego brutally. He boarded into West Borivali bus instead of the East.

What else could he do? He got off in half way and lingered while blaming his fate. When we are happy, we boost our ego. When it is not, we say it is our fate. How selfish we were.

But that’s where Ganpati Bappa kept a twist in his screenplay! He came across a local Travels in the middle of his walk-back to Borivali East. He eagerly booked for the Mumbai local trip. It was his weekend plan! If Tingu was there, he would have reiterated his philosophy “Nothing will move without His wish”!

***

That was of the type of “Look here. This is Marina Beach. There will be a sea”. But there was no better way to get acquainted with the city. A ‘divine chariot’ in green color started from Borivali East before the sun rose, went straight to India Gate, and continued its journey to Siddhi Vinayagar Temple, Mahalakshmi Mandir, Malabar Hill, Wankhede Stadium, Marine Drive, Juhu Beach.

Co-passengers are from different states of India. The bus was like a kadhambam garland (a mix of different types of flowers and leaves). Yes, that’s the color of India.

A Gujarati man was sitting beside Jaggu. They are all of the same age.

He yearned “South Indians have embraced English and advanced in information technology. Hindi is not a bar for them. Look at the North Indians. They still follow Hindi and pull us back”.

Jaggu responded to him “It was a political decision at that time. The decision was pushed by the political party. Even if there was Hindi, we would have mastered it as well. Situation is different now. The quality of Government school education is degrading day by day, private sectors are embracing CBSE. Hindi will enter anyway. But will it make any difference, I do not know. Future may be with English. Neither Tamil nor Hindi”.

He agreed “It may be. But pushing the language is useless. They can not succeed.”

Jaggu winked while saying “But that’s what China did. We criticize India while pointing at the rise of China. Are we ready to make similar sacrifices made by Chinese?”. The discussion ended when the bus stopped at Mahalakshmi Mandir.

It was post noon time. Jaggu went inside a tea shop as he felt hungry. He met two Coimbatoreans there! Chatting in a Tea shop is a ‘Tamil-national-heritage’, isn’t it? They had a quick discussion before they departed – a hi and a bye!

A Noon meal mercy & Cordial Bus ticket

Fanatic readers worship Greece as the land of great philosophers. 90’s college pass-outs may remember it as the land of Olympics 2004. I remember it as the abode of Greek angel – Irene Skiliva 🙂 . For those who are not aware, she was a Greek model and beauty queen who was crowned Miss World 1996 in India.

This story starts on my journey to Athens.

Mercy

It was an afternoon flight. I had some cereals before boarding. I received my food plate while cruising. Alas, I got the non-veg meal as I expected. I tried to modify my food options before boarding. The airline did not allow that (Or I did not know how to do it!). My request to replace it to a veg/vegan meal bounced back in vain.

The supervisor came to attend to my request. She expressed her grief for not fulfilling my request. I enquired for any food, that can be purchased. It was a full flight. They did not have any such choice. I begged her to see if she could find anything. She was not hopeful and went back.

My tummy fierced in hunger. The aroma of food and the sweet sounds of the spoon and fork enhanced the fuselage. I was sitting like the angry rishi Durvasa cursing my fate for every clock tick.

Arrival sections of the airport usually won’t have any eateries. As it was my first visit, I didn’t know how long I needed to wait to get my next course of meal. I was calculating when the next meal.

I heard an ‘excuse me’. The same supervisor lady, offered me a food plate with macaroni and eggplants. She might have found some options from kid meals, I thought. However, the hunger, the food and the merciful staff are still memorable. I was not sure, how many times I thanked her.

Cordial

My first bus trip to Athens was so packed. It was a peak-hour trip in the evening. They did not have an option to pay fare to get a ticket. One of my project mates offered me a couple of ticket cards. He came all the way until the bus stop, pushed me inside the right bus, which went via my hotel.

The trolleybus was running in electricity. The trolley polls – which looked like the long horns of Indian rhinoceros – touched the two lines of the overhead electric lines.

I was not sure what to do with the tickets inside the bus. It was so packed like a Mumbai local train. I showed the ticket to fellow passengers and asked them, “Where to tap this ticket?”. He explained to me in detail, but in Greek. But I found the ticket punch machine based on his hand-gestures. It was close to another exit. It was like a hundi of Bhadrakali Amman Temple. One of the fellow passengers helped me to insert my ticket. It was supposed to punch my machine and give it back. (I understand they use cashless payments using credit cards now) But it spit my ticket back. From the Greek he spoke, I understood that my ticket was invalid. I had one more card to save my life. It failed too.

I was so close to my bus stop. I enquired if there was a way to pay for the ticket. It was possible. But I need to go to the driver’s cubicle. I was on the rear side of a vestibule bus, which is taking more passengers than its capacity. The man who helped to punch my tickets suggested, “You just go. No problem. It is free trip. free”. Finally I got down as a ‘With-out‘.
* With-out – It is the keyword for ticketless travel in Chennai.

A travel don’t have to be rules-based. Co-life travelers like the flight attendant who took effort to search for a food, the project mate who offered tickets, the helpful passengers make it merciful & cordial.

Masquerader at Riyadh

The prophet Muhammad travelled from Mecca to Medina with his followers to escape persecution. The same punya-bhoomi had some crooks too. It is about my travel with a cheat on the same land.

It was the prophet’s blessing to clear a sluggish immigration queue. The officer asked something. I could not understand anything. I repeatedly told him, I didn’t understand any of his words. He started uttering the same words at high volume. I was wondering, did he think I was deaf? However, he cleared me at last.

I was a bit nervous as most of the people left when I finished my immigration. The baggage claim area looked like a haunted house. My luggage was rolling around the belt way as a lost-child in Mariamman temple thiruvizha (a festival). I came across a lonely place called the arrival hall.

I was blinking as I could not find a way to get into a taxi. I felt like I was in Chennai airport. If anyone wants to move all alone in Chennai airport, that would be one of his worst decisions of his life. On the other side, we’ll certainly feel the ‘aroma’ of Chennai airport as soon as they come out. Riyadh is no way less than it.

I enquired one gentleman there about the way to the taxi stand. He gave me a surprising story, like all taxis are gone already. What an idiot I am. I believed it too. (Mistake 1) Because, I was stranded at midnight in Chennai without bus/auto/taxi! That may be the reason .

The ‘gentleman’ told me that he himself was a taxi driver. He told me the fare in advance. I accepted it too (Mistake 2). Then he took me to the parking area, not to the taxi stand. I felt something was not correct; still I followed him (Mistake 3). It was not a taxi; it was his own private car. I got in (Mistake 4). He tried to bait me. I avoided. He suggested a nice place to eat. He ‘offered me’ an opportunity to eat dinner with him. He suggested to me a world-class place to drink. I did not bite them. He had his innate capacity to aim at the pockets of duffers like me.

Then I throw my bait. I told him that I had no money and I needed to collect money from my partner – who was waiting at the hotel – to pay him. Of course, it was not a 100% agmark lie. It is not 100% ISI truth also. He bit my bait :-). He sounded as if confused. All of a sudden, he doubted if I’d pay him as I accepted.

He did not talk much after that. He dropped me in the hotel. The hotel said, it was not the right place. They had another branch. This ‘gentleman’ dropped me in the wrong branch. He told me it was near by and suggested I walk. He urged me to pay him. I refused. In turn, I asked him to drop me in the right branch.

He touted more money to drop in the other branch, which I refused. I became the assailant then (Not sure if it is a mistake or smart move) “Either drop me at the right branch. else, drop me again at airport”. As more people were involved in the scene, I was ready to call my partner from the hotel’s phone.

Finally, he dropped me in the right place. I paid him what I accepted. During my return journey, I paid half of what I paid to that gentle man.

A lazy evening at Asiatique Night Market, Bangkok

Bangkok is a tourist’s paradise.

Thai Mango Sticky Rice – One of the popular Thai dishes. But we used to have rice with mango in our house in Tamilnadu. I heard Kannadiga-s have this food habit too. Alphonso and Banganapalli mangoes will overtake Thai mango in taste.
Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, Bangkok

If you are bored with the usual malls, you may need to try Asiatique night market. One of the open markets of the world – like Pondy bazaar of Chennai – but in a massive scale.

How to go?

It is located on the banks of Chao Phraya river. There seems to be a boat facility. But my guys took me on the BTS sky train (Bangkok metro). You need to get down at Saphan Taksin station. If you are not sure, easy to take a taxi.

Walkable distance from Saphan Taksin station

Why Asiatique?

You will find a variety of stalls, eateries in ‘multiple rows and columns’.

Do you mathi kettan solai (the forest of the lost person)? It is located in Kodaikanal forests. If you lose your way, you can neither reach your target nor come back. Asiatique is like that. If you miss your co-visitor, it is difficult to find him/her back. You need to know the building, row and shop number to trace.

This is food paradise. This is also a shopper’s paradise. You will find many shops – souvenir shops, text tiles, eateries, local food, international food, entertainment hubs – what else do you need?

Do you ask me what did I purchase? Nothing.. I had good food :D.

Kingly guests back in Colombo

There was a scenic train route from Galle to Colombo. But Rangamani’s troops took the Southern Expressway to reach Colombo in two hours. That highway connected Hambantota, Matara and Galle with Colombo. It passed through lush spice gardens.

E01 expressway

They exit from the highway at Battaramulla, a suburb of Colombo. The vehicle was stopped at a supermarket upon Thangamani’s request. She bought a container made of coconut shell as a souvenir. “If it is in a super market, it is a souvenir. If it lies on the street, it is a kottachi (Tamil name for coconut shell). So the value is based on where we are!” Rangamani’s philosophy did not disturb Thangamani. She was used to it. So she was busy in hunting for next prey!

Colombo

Then they went to the Millennium Restaurant in the Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte area of Colombo for lunch. It was late in the noon. The food was excellent. That was the most delicious South Indian food, since they started their trip to Sri Lanka. It looked and tasted good. There was no cook when they ordered for another Dosa. Cook went out as the work was done. “Oh no. Since the day they reached Galle, there was an evil eye on their tummies!” Rangamani expressed his grief.

Gangaramaya Vihara is the last attraction of that trip. The trip was started in Kattukalai Selva Vinayakar temple at Kandy. It ended at this temple. It was super clean. The temple looked like a collection of antiques.

Gangaramaya vihara, Colombo

It is said that the hair of the Buddha is preserved. In this temple, antiques are displayed as well. The ground floor of the temple hosts old cars, horse cart carriages and many antique carriages. The temple was so divine. But due to the travel, Thangamani was not in a mood for a deep worship. Kids were tired as well.

The long trip and the local trip inside Colombo pushed them into bed. Before that they swallowed couple of plates of tasty pulao.

Suitcases were packed and locked. Hand bags were placed above them. Travel documents were ready. Mobile phones were charged. The family took everything and rushed towards the restaurant for their breakfast. The journey plan was completed. They were ready to return back.

10 minutes passed, 20 minutes passed, 40 minutes passed. There was no sign of breakfast! “Was it a breakfast or break-slow?” Ranga tried to crack a joke. Ramada, Colombo gave them a good dinner on time, but delayed the breakfast like anything! Despite he asked few times, the kingly guests and their kids left the hotel with empty stomach, as it was getting late. It was horrible for Rangamani to ask the kids to leave the dining table, after they took their seats!

Removing the negatives, it was a good trip.

So called the Star hotel hospitality of Colombo might have forgotten to feed them. But Junga’s patti (grandma) was ready with the noon meal in India. Wherever we go, we are bound to our mother and mother country. India’s gates are open, always.

..End of Sri Lankan Travelogue..

A journey to Galle

Junga’s eyes fluttered with tears as he looked at the fruits and breads for breakfast on the 8th day of the trip 11 Jun 2019, after a starving for a night .

The hotel he stayed in Galle was nothing special. There was no parking. The TV was faulty. The A/C timer did not work. The staff members had gone on leave. The kitchen was closed. So there was no food obviously. There were no shops outside too. For a vegan/vegetarian, Galle’s food market is a godforsaken place.

They purchased some fruits on the way to Nuwara Eliya. They managed with the same after their long trip from Gataragama the previous day.

The long trip started from Kathirkamam/Kataragama temple. Before that, the younger chap Bunga was searching for a toy-earth-mover at the shops near the temple. Thangamani was searching for a picture of ‘Kathirkamam Murugan’. Due to the assault on tourism industry due to Easter Bombing, most of the shops at Kathirkamam/Kataragama temple were closed. Very few shop owners opened their shops with their blanched faces. One akka made business with Bunga. But Thangamani did not get what she want.

Kataragama – Galle Highway

After blessed by Kadirkamam Kandan, they started their 4 hour journey to Galle .

IMG_2282

It was like the two lane bypass road in Pudukkottai. The road was scenic, as it cut through many lakes, rivers, ponds and farm fields.

Hambantota Port

On the way to Galle, they passed through the port of Hambantota. On hearing the word Hambantota, Junga acted as if he was in deep sleep. Because Rangamani and Junga talked a lot about that port and debt trap diplomacy in Singapore. Junga knows that if Ranga opens his mouth about this topic, he will keep on orating like a suvishesha prasangakan. He does not want to get intoxicated by the worldly pleasures of his father.

But Rangamani did not mind. He started as usual. “British offered loans to the rulers of India before colonization. Rajah of Chandragiri approved lands to build St George Fort in a coastal hamlet ChennaRayan Pattinam (Chennai). Finally it became the bastion for East Indian Company. My son, after many centuries, the history is getting repeated in Sri Lanka.”

“Is history like a beach-horse?” asked Junga. (Beach horse will walk for some distance with a guest and it will retreat. It will again repeat with another guest.)

“Ha ha. Nice comparison. In a way, that’s true. Hambantota is ‘a China inside Sri Lanka’. As part the belt and road initiative, China considers this port as important. This port is completely under Chinese control.” Ranga might have repeated the same sentence for 1000th time. But he did not mind. He said it for the 1001th time, while looking at the four lanes stretch of the highway.

அம்பாந்தோட்டை
Hambantota

That was a grandly built port. They saw the new cranes, with the Indian ocean as its background. Rangamani talked a lot like a Diwali cracker, when the vehicle crossed the port. Unheard of that, Junga continued to act if as he was sleeping.

But Thangamani bite the bait. She wondered, “Darling, you talk too much about this port. But it remains locked. ayo there is a cow on the road.. Is this port closed for the day?”. Junga pinched his mam to signal her to keep quiet.

அம்பாந்தோட்டை
Hambantota port

Rangamani’s face was shining as the summer sunlight of Chennai. He found an audience. He replied her with thrusted eye balls, shaking head and waving hands.

“Thangamani, that is what makes the matter more serious. The port and the nearby airport and infrastructure are world popular. They swallowed enormous amount of money, but it did not give returns. So they are still ghost towns. See the cow!! Sri Lankan rulers were blamed to push their country to the debt by building such non-performing-assets and finally offering the lands, infrastructures to foreign countries in return.”

Thangamani realized that her hubby – with all his gestures – looked terrific like the gigantic Agora Veerabhadra statue of Madurai Meenakshi temple.

The Trade Centre

The airport

Ranga described with utmost sadness, “See Darling, Colombo port, Colombo airport is so close to Hambantota. There was no real demand in the market to build a parallel facilities. A business without demand is a loss. At the same time, it brings an eastern power to Indian Ocean. Just because the eastern power is here, western power came here too. Sri Lankan rulers transformed a silent ocean into a another Sri Lanka. With this inefficient ruling, they ask international organizations to expand their sea space more.”

Ranga’s concerns are not completely exaggerated. Effectively, this is what happened in Sri Lanka in 2022.

Weeraketiya – Matara – Galle scenic highway

When Thangamani closed his mouth finally, the van crossed the next city, Weeraketiya. That was the hometown of Rajapaksas. From there, their journey became even more beautiful. Roaring seashore on the left; villages, forests, and rivers on the right side.

Tushara told that it was an ancient gem land – ‘Ratnagiri‘. Precious stones was dug up from the earth.

Finally they reached the seashore town Galle. Bunga was shouting on one side as he was afraid of sea. He maintained a social distance from Indian ocean.

Junga was shouting on the other side. “What da?” Rangamani got distracted from his attempt to convince Bunga to dip his legs in water. he screamed in air “Amma is afraid to get in”.

Rangamani keep Bunga to his shoulders and went near Thangamani. He said “See Thangamani.. We came for…” Thanamani understood that he is ready to advice. So she interrupted immediately… “Come on hubby.. I come already”. If needed, she is ready to jump into the ocean, than listening to his mann ki baat.

There comes the starving night with disturbed sleep in an haunted inn.

The family went to beach again, after they get up. Tushara might be searching for them. They never went anywhere without him. He came there to supervise their safety, as the beach was desolated. Such a kind man.

The Infant of Kathirkamam/Kataragama

Rangamani belched heavily after a tasty breakfast with idiyappam, coconut sambal, and fresh cut-fruits. The service personnel – who was cleaning the swimming pool – stumbled and fell inside the pool. Unaware of that, Ranga started to thrust the bread slices into the oval-shaped-aperture of his face!

Thangamani wondered, if his face resembled Hanuman’s, when he chewed some part of the bread by keeping the remaining parts of the break on both sides of the cheeks. Eventually the backlogs of bread stored in his container-cheeks were processed, followed by juice or water. Day 7 – 10 Jun 2019, began like that.

The hotel was located close to the Yala National Park and the Kathirkamam (Kataragama) Kandan Temple. Usually some of the Indians will pack and take away the free breakfast provided at the hotel. Air India crew takes away buffet food in boxes, said UK hotel. Do not do it in India and abroad. It is not allowed.

Thangamani requested the Chandrika hotel staff to pack some Idiappam and coconut sambal for their younger kid Bunga. She was not sure if the Bunga would get suitable food that day. They did not hesitate. They packed immediately. They refused to accept payment, although Rangamani insisted. So Rangamani and Thangamani want to express their gratitude once again. The packed food helped the kid during their long travel from Kathirkamam to Galle.

Thangamani was the devotee of all Gods. She had special reservations for the infant Kandan (Baby Murugan). The previous evening, Rangamani told her that the Kathirkamam temple was just 20 KMs away.

The couple appealed to Tushara to see if his company could amend their travel itinerary to include that one also. He spoke to his management and they too agreed. Ranga asked about the variation in the cost. However, Blue Lanka Tours has offered it at no cost. Thanks to Tushara, Prameela and the management of Blue Lanka Tours.

Thangamani was overwhelmed. She said “It is the Sri Lankan Kandan had ordered us to visit him.”

Indians must visit is Kathirkamam. Although this temple is small, it is a beautiful and ancient temple. You can not see the thirumeni (idol) of Lord Murugan. You may see the screen with the glittering image of Kandan. The priest will perform rites / pujas on its behind. “People can only see the main deity once a year” Tushara mentioned.

The impact of Buddhism was evident there. The rituals alienated them. There is a temple in Singapore that follows Sri Lankan Tamil type of worshipping. It would be classic. The worshipping method at Kathirkamam looks to be non-native. There was a shrine for the Buddha. Vishnu and Brahma were the guardian deities there. We saw this in Kandy too. (See: Buddha Tooth Temple Kandy). With the divine kingini sound of the bells, the puja gave Thangamani immense pleasure. The pumpkin sambar rice – the prasadam – gave Rangamani the enlightenment.
