Recap: Poongudi station, a daily stop turned spark for Jayanthan. Jyoti, the hawker there, brightened his mornings with more than chai. Laughter and shared dreams bloomed their connection. One impulse later, he invited her on his journey, a decision that whispered change.

Chapter 10/26: Journeys of the heart
The rhythmic rumble of the train sang a new song today, a melody that resonated with a warmth blooming in my chest. Jyoti, usually quick with her witty remarks, was lost in thought, a furrow on her brow I hadn’t seen before.
We boarded at Poongudi. My heart raced – not from the hurried boarding, but from the unexpected presence of Jyoti beside me. Secured in our corner seats, a silence fell between us, unlike the usual banter. Jyoti stared at an empty seat; her gaze distant. Yet, when our eyes met, they held a sparkle I couldn’t decipher.

A few minutes later, Mrs. Mangalam got up. Jyoti and I shifted to let her pass. As Mrs. Mangalam reached the aisle, she paused and turned to Jyoti. Jyoti followed readily. The light dimmed within the compartment as the train passed beneath a heavy tree with lush branches. It wasn’t hard to guess they spoke about Jyoti’s ‘errand.’ But the details remained a mystery.
The wind from the open doorway ruffled Mrs. Mangalam’s hair as she leaned towards Jyoti. Their hushed conversation remained a mystery, punctuated by worried expressions from Mrs. Mangalam and nervous glances from Jyoti.
Leaning in, Mrs. Mangalam likely questioned Jyoti’s presence, a suspicion lingering in her gaze as she looked between us. Jyoti avoided eye contact and seemed flustered, struggled to offer explanation. Despite her disapproval, Mrs. Mangalam’s gestures seemed to be warning her about something. At the end of their conversation, smiles bloomed on both their faces, perhaps signifying an agreement. As they pulled away, Mrs. Mangalam reached out, a mischievous glint in her eyes, and pinched Jyoti’s cheeks playfully.
Jyoti returned, a bright smile playing on her lips, replacing her earlier worry. Curious, I gestured in question, mouthing ‘What happened?’ Her reply came in the form of a slight shrug and a playful smile, leaving the details delightfully ambiguous.

Relieved and lighter after their exchange, Jyoti seemed to float on air. We talked for what felt like hours, the rhythmic clacks of the train a background score to our conversation. Dreams and laughter danced in the air, punctuated by shy touches.
